Orient Road Jail Overview
Orient Road Jail is operated by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and listed under Jails as Jail Division I. It sits at 1201 N. Orient Road in East Tampa and serves as the county's central booking and release point. The people held here are adult arrestees moving through intake, pretrial detainees, county-sentenced inmates, and individuals being processed for bond or release. HCSO publishes the facility phone as 813-247-8300.
HCSO annual-report material describes Orient Road Jail as a 636,000-square-foot building with 14 acres under roof and a rated capacity of 1,711 inmates. The 2025 report describes recent work there: aging air handlers were replaced, signage and lighting were upgraded, Central Booking was restructured to improve contraband detection, and the jail moved to a cashless release system. HCSO did not publish an Orient-only average daily population in the sources reviewed.
Orient Road Jail Capacity and Population
The clearest sourced figure for Orient Road Jail is its rated capacity of 1,711 inmates, from the HCSO 2020 annual report. The same body of reports says Orient Road Jail booked more than 42,000 people during 2024. A booking count is not a daily population, since one person can be booked, released, and booked again, so the two numbers describe different things and should not be merged into a single headcount.
The agency's locations page lists Orient Road Jail and Falkenburg Road Jail together under Jails. A look at the HCSO locations page shows both jail addresses and the shared jail information line.
That page confirms Orient Road Jail's address and ties it to the same countywide arrest inquiry used for any inmate search.
How to Look Up an Inmate at Orient Road Jail
Inmates at Orient Road Jail are searched through the HCSO Arrest Inquiry, the county jail roster, not a facility-only system. The roster covers current inmates and adult arrests with electronic records since January 1, 1995. It updates every 30 minutes after a booking is entered, and a released person stays listed for 90 days.
- Open the HCSO Arrest Inquiry portal and read the Important Notice.
- Search by name as Last Name, First Name, or by booking number if you have one.
- For a person booked in the last day, search exact first and last name, since new arrests are held from general listings for 24 hours.
- Open the profile for charges, bond, booking photo, and custody status.
If a person was sentenced to state prison, they leave Orient Road Jail and appear in the Florida DOC locator instead, and federal or immigration custody uses the BOP or ICE locators.

HCSO changed visitation on October 28, 2025. The on-site visitation center closed, and all public video visitation is now remote through SmartInmate. Video visits open once an inmate is assigned to housing and run roughly 9:30 a.m. to 8:45 p.m., with two prescheduled no-cost hours each week. Qualified professional visitors still meet in person and must register with a driver's license and professional ID such as a Florida Bar card.

Mail, Phone, and Money at Orient Road Jail
Since October 28, 2025, personal mail goes to a central processing center, not the jail. It must be addressed to the inmate's name and booking number, care of the Mail Processing Center, PO Box 9115, Seminole, FL 33775-9115. Personal mail sent to the jail is returned. Legal and privileged mail for inmates housed at Orient still goes to the facility at 1201 N. Orient Road. Booking and Release at Orient Road Jail
Orient Road Jail is where the county's booking and release functions are centered. After an arrest, staff enter the person into the Jail Management System, which creates the record the roster draws from. Intake covers a security search, property handling, identification and fingerprints, and a medical and mental-health screen before classification assigns housing. HCSO's 2025 report says Central Booking was restructured to improve contraband detection.
Release is handled here too. HCSO moved Orient Road Jail to a cashless release system that issues funded debit cards to people when they are released, replacing cash. Cash bonds and purges are accepted at this facility in the exact amount or by money order, with no credit or debit cards, and the person posting must bring the inmate's correctly spelled name, date of birth, and a valid ID. A look at the jail command page gives more facility context.
HCSO's Jail Division I page describes the Orient Road Jail command. A look at the HCSO Jail Division I page shows the division tied to this facility.
That division page confirms Orient Road Jail's place in the HCSO Department of Detention Services.
Posting Bond at Orient Road Jail
Orient Road Jail is where cash bonds and purges are paid in Hillsborough County. HCSO accepts them only in the exact amount, takes money orders, and does not accept credit or debit cards. The person posting must bring the inmate's correctly spelled name, the inmate's date of birth, and a valid ID. Surety bonds are accepted only from registered Florida bail bond agents, so a family that cannot post the full cash amount usually contacts a licensed bondsman. HCSO directs bond questions to Inmate Records at 813-247-8400.
After a case ends, the money side shifts to the court. HCSO continues to collect cash bonds posted for defendants but transmits the money to the Clerk of the Circuit Court, which handles distribution once the case is disposed. Florida Statutes § 903.286 lets the clerk withhold enough from a returned cash bond to cover unpaid prosecution and court costs. Before checking on a refund, confirm the case status through the clerk, since the distribution step happens only after disposition.
Directions and Public Access at Orient Road Jail
Orient Road Jail sits at 1201 N. Orient Road in East Tampa, near the Orient Road corridor and the I-4, Selmon Expressway, and I-75 access network. From downtown Tampa, head east toward Ybor and East Tampa, then use Orient Road to reach the address. From the Brandon side or the Selmon Expressway, approach through the East Tampa road network and confirm the turn-in, since the campus keeps separate visitor, staff, and intake entrances.
HCSO does not publish a parking or transit guide for the jail, and the on-site visitation center closed in October 2025, which cut routine public visitation traffic. Bond, records, professional visits, and legal mail still bring people to the area. Confirm visitor parking, the correct lobby, and any accessible entrance by calling 813-247-8300 before arriving, and verify any route in a live map application first.
About Orient Road Jail
Beyond booking, Orient Road Jail is part of HCSO's broader detention work, which includes a state-certified jail drug-treatment program, a mental-health unit, and reentry programming across the jail system. The 2024 report highlighted upgraded booking sally-port security fencing and front-lobby lighting, and the 2025 report added a CENTEGIX safety system in the detention centers. Once sentenced to prison, inmates leave here and transfer to the Florida Department of Corrections, while the larger housing population is held at Falkenburg Road Jail. The roster how-to and access channels are covered on the jail inmate records page.
Property and release work also run through this facility. HCSO's Inmate Property Bureau safekeeps the personal property of inmates housed at both county jails, handling thousands of property bags on a typical day, and it processes property release as people leave custody. The cashless release system replaced cash payouts with funded debit cards, which is part of why the 2025 report describes Central Booking and release as the most reworked operations at Orient Road Jail. For families, the practical takeaway is that booking, bond, property, and release all converge here, even though most of the jail population is housed at Falkenburg.
Note: Confirm custody status and visitation by calling 813-247-8300 before traveling to Orient Road Jail, since roster data can lag a recent booking or release.
